Liverpool have the edge over Manchester City in the Premier League title race, according to Graeme Souness.
Opened up a gap to defending champions Manchester City over the weekend following Pep Guardiola’s side dropped to a surprise 3-2 defeat at Carrow Road on Saturday.
The absence of Aymeric Laporte, who faces up to 6 months out, has already proven pricey with John Stones both fighting and Nicolas Otamendi .
When asked when Laporte’s absence gives Liverpool the edge in the title race, then Souness told Sky Sports News:”I believe so. With the injury of Laporte I presumed City could find it hard against the better teams. Over the weekend, they did some on them with all due regard to Norwich.
“I thought they would get in most games but against better teams they would find it tough to shield and get caught out.
It is not a major advantage, you have to bear in mind that we are in September but blood has gone into Liverpool. They have momentum and nobody is asking any questions of these all eyes are on City.”
Souness believes the execution culture instilled by Klopp in Anfield is bringing the very best out of Liverpool’s players.
“They’re a group I don’t think anybody enjoys playing against because they are aggressive and they try every part of your game together using the physicality and technique all of them have,” he added.
“They behave as a team. It is unusual in today’s game but they have players who are prepared to point fingers if they are not at it. This makes them very powerful.
“They’re the team that nobody likes playing against, people will say that around City in another way. You’ve got to be at your very best .”
Laporte’s absence should give Stones a chance to have an protracted run in Guardiola.
Souness believes the England international has the potential to be one of the top defenders in Europe when he can improve his decision making.
“[City] have to hope Stones and Otamendi may form a venture.
“I believe Stones is only missing something, while it’s his decision? He’s got the capacity to be the very best, better than most of them other than [Virgil] van Dijk.
“He needs to get his decision-making place on, whether he has that City might have one of the greatest centre-halves from the nation, possibly away from the country.”
