Serena Williams says she”must do everything nicely” to acquire US Open semi-final against Elina Svitolina and stay on track for a 24th Grand Slam.
37, american Williams, is planning to fit Australian Margaret Court’s listing of Grand Slam singles titles.
Fifth seed Svitolina is the highest rated player left at the event of the women and conquer the Johanna Konta 6-4 6-4 in the quarter-finals of Britain on Tuesday.
“Elina is obviously a fighter, so she gets a great deal of balls back,” explained Williams.
“She doesn’t make a great deal of errors. She’s one of those players who does everything really well so I need to do everything well, too.”
Seeded eighth, Williams is on the lookout for her US Open title but her first.
She’s won four of her five games against the 24-year-old Ukrainian but the victory of Svitolina came in Rio in their meeting – a last 16 match at the 2016 Olympic Games.
“It was an incredible atmosphere. I played with really a terrific match,” said Svitolina. “I was sort of young and did not have large wins at that moment.
“It gave me the confidence to really allow me to believe I could play consistent against the very best players.”
Williams’ successes at Flushing Meadows in 2019 have included wins against world number one Maria Sharapova, 22nd seed Petra Martic along with the American needed only 44 moments to thrash China’s 16th seed Qiang Wang 6-1 6-0 in the quarter-finals.
Svitolina, who reached the final four at Wimbledon earlier this year but hasn’t played in a Grand Slam final, continues to be in form and has not dropped a set in five matches.
She beat Serena’s sister Venus, herself a yearlong US Open champion, in American 10th seed Madison Keys, round two and then Konta at the previous eight.
“I need to respond quickly and try to take my opportunities once I have them,” Svitolina added.
“I have played some big hitters in this tournament and I have to react quickly with my feet and with my shots. Then when I have the chance, do this.”
In the seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland happens on Canadian Bianca Andreescu.
Bencic pumped one Naomi Osaka 7-5 6-4 on Tuesday and backed up with a triumph over Croatia’s Donna Vekic, the 23rd seed, also on Wednesday.
Bencic was taken by that success for the very first time in her profession to a Grand Slam semi-final.
“Semi-final feels great at the moment,” she explained. “I had been dreaming about this day arriving but you don’t know. I worked hard for it.”
Bencic fell as low as 328th in the world rankings after injuries and operation on her left wrist two decades back but is sure to return .
Andreescu, meanwhile, could even go into the top 10 after coming from behind to beat Belgium’s Elise Mertens from the quarter-finals.
This year the Canadian, who’ve won two WTA titles, is making her first appearance in the previous four.
In the men, British set Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski take on Robert Farah and top-seeded Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal, who won the doubles title at Wimbledon in July.
Whereas Farah and Cabral removed the pairing of Japan’s Ben McLachlan along with Britain’s Luke Bambridge Skupski and murray acquired a thrilling from Jackson Withrow and Americans Jack Sock.
As he is also in Saturday’s mixed doubles partnering American Bethanie Mattek-Sands murray is on course for two doubles titles. Last season’s winners will play the duo of Chan Hao-ching and Michael Venus or fourth seeds Latisha Chan along with Ivan Dodig.
